Malcolm Storey
I have consistently been involved in organising both people and events since boyhood, having been captain of school cricket, football and rugby teams.
Adolescence and early manhood brought further responsibilities in the form of organisation of works outings, secretarial work for various sports teams, captaincy of rugby, football and other sports and involvement with and organising of money raising efforts mostly for the rugby club.
In the mid 1960s I became interested in Folk Music and have retained this as my main leisure activity.
Inevitably I became involved in the running of folk events and this gradually grew to the extent that I became Director of the Whitby Folk Week, an event which takes place annually and is the biggest of its kind in England and draws people from all over the UK and abroad.
A brief history of my involvement in the organisational side of folk events is as follows:
1970 – 1976 Bookings secretary for Folk Union One folk club in Hull, this was the club formed by the Watersons.
1973 – 1985 Member of local district committee of the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS). Chairman for 5 years in two spells, Treasurer for 3 years and for most of the time representative to the Area Council, which covered the whole of the North East England. Chairman of Area Council for 4 Years and for 3 years Chairman of Joint Area Council which covered the whole of the north of England and met annually.
1976 - 1982 Organiser of Folk Union One through the most successful period of its existence. All the major figures of the Folk world were booked at some time during this period, including the Spinners, who had not appeared in a folk club for over twenty years. At the time of my taking over the club had less than £50 in reserve. I handed over almost £2K to my successor.
1977 - 1986 Member of the National Executive Committee of the EFDSS, during which time I served consistently on the Management Committee, for the most part as vice chairman and also chaired the Sales and Publications for four of the seven years I was on that particular Committee. For two years I was also vice chairman of the society and duties of that post included chairing the AGM which had a regular attendance of 500
1981 - 1982 Administrator and Song Director for Whitby Folk Week in the first year of it being removed from the direction of a full time member of staff of the FFDSS, who had placed the future of the event in an uncertain state.
1982 - 1987 Administrator and Co-director of Whitby Folk Week during which time the event grew enormously and away (amicably) from the EFDSS who were not in a position to accept what they termed 'risk capital ventures'.
1987 – 2006 Director, Whitby Folk Week.
Also during the 1980s I spent a couple of years on the Music Panel of Lincolnshire and Humberside Arts.
In and amongst all of the folk involvement I sang regularly at the Folk Union One until the mid 1980s and have attended and sung at many other clubs, festivals and song weekends. My material being almost exclusively English traditional.
